Etching my Laptop

Last year at foocamp i saw this cool etching machine where folks were taking images and burning them in to their laptops and cell phones. But there was a line, and one guy who spent all of his time running the machine. This year the squid lab kids just decided to teach the first person who wanted something etched how to do it. Then after that it was your responsibility to teach the next person in line. All weekend folks were etching, and then teaching. It was great, if a little bit like the telephone game. By the time it got to me we were told that the test printings had to be exactly %23 intensity. Later i discovered that something in the %20 range worked…

I got the image from my blog etched in to my laptop. I’m really happy with it. I also got my camera to post directly to flickr, so i guess i’ll start taking / posting more photos again.

Update: Folks have asked how it was done, there’s a post on makezine detailing how to etch your own laptop. Unfortunately it requires access to a $15,000 laser etcher.
