On the road again...

So, last week i had a golden ticket fall in to my lap. To Cancún, México and the site of the fifth Ministerial of the WTO. Only one catch, i had to get 20 computers from California over 4000 miles to Cancún in an insanely short timeframe, before September 1st. This series of blog entries will document the trip. I've also setup a photoblog so that you can get photos as well.

For those who don't know, the WTO is the evil multinational organization which negotiates 'trade' treaties through a form of 'consensus' which would make a dictator proud. There's been plenty written about why the WTO is evil, but it's basically that it enforces an economic system which benefits a few wealthy. Capitalism has long been about benefiting the wealthy few, that's nothing new. What the WTO and it's neoliberal policies do is hollow out representative democracies by taking all the real decisions in treaty negotiations leaving politicians to clean up the mess and tweak things.

Indymedia started during protests about the WTO almost 4 years ago. It's hard for me to believe that Indymedia's been around for four years, but it doesn't surprise me that we're still fighting against the WTO. Ooops, shit, gotta go catch the plane.

This post will be posted and backdated once i arrive for obvious reasons.

I dont know about you - but I
assume you do not know what what mutually benefical idea free trade is based on - oppurtunity cost etcr. The real evil is the USAs and the EUs farm subsidies which are anti-free trade and are the real ruin of many LEDCs.
Please in the future place your protest and person in the direction of the right cause (anti-protectionism and pro-free trade), which is the fastest simplest easiest fairest way to alleviate (cure) third world poverty, rather than in the direction of the equality of poverty - the companion of anti free trade.
