Building a Hacker Culture in Uruguay

Uruguay’s a pretty nifty place, a country most people don’t know exists in South America. At OSCON 2011 I gave a talk about some of the cool projects the country’s started, like giving out laptops to all the school children and making every landline in the country a free internet connection. Here are the slides:

  1. Good to hear about the laptop program as well as the phone line internet access. I’ve been finding out more about Uruguay over the last few months and it’s a very interesting country.

I have some questions about Uruguay but I’d prefer a more private means of contact than blog comments or twitter messages.

Please drop me an email if you would.

    Thanks,

Nice, but autocratic with obey pic? Uruguay’s much freer than USA and most of Europe. I moved here from the US and I have muuuuch more personal freedoms here.

    Hey Josh,

The Ceibal program is awesome, but they are also incredibly closed and autocratic. It’s one of their major faults. No honest assessment of the program should leave out the fact that the organization has a serious lack of open communication and participation.

Uruguay in general is great lots of freedom, but LATU and Plan Ceibal are definitely autocratic.
