There’s a youtube video floating around of a music video from a ‘hot country singer with a message for the troops.’ My first thought was, is this real? Well it is real, but it’s also a satire, not a country star, just a ‘singer’. Anybody who sings country music can be a country singer.
Turns out that Sandy Belle is actually Sandra Bauleo of the queer new york based sketch comedy group The Dregs.
What’s most interesting to me, aside from seeing the video and how it’s using satire of pop media online really well, is that there were multiple copies of the video uploaded to youtube. The version which clearly states an anti-war message and that it’s satire only has 6000 views vs 31,000 for the straight faced satire. People like it when they aren’t sure of the message and have to figure it out on their own, or they are really tricked. Anyway, that’s who Sandy Belle is.

I live in the south and I can tell you that this video makes a wonderful point – take out the nasty parts and you have the attitude of many people here. The last time I spoke to my redneck born-again uncle (which was recently) he told me that he felt terrible and was praying because he was starting to wonder if the war was wrong and if Bush maybe wasn’t completely truthful. *Sigh….And I bet that if he watched this video he still wouldn’t get it.

The video was very funny/”stimulating” but I think troops will be a bit disappointed if they ever meet her and try to take her up on her offer when they found out she’s in a queer band. Nonetheless, it was well done. I’d have to say that’s got to be the most convincing arguments for immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

i love the image of the aggresive guy with the flowers.
the post cards were delivered in amsterdam, dunno if in other place either if you just pick it from somebody else. in any case, i got surprised and will continue reading you.

Awesome video. I especially love the attention to detail in the cinematography, perfectly parodying the horribly parody-able cookie cutter formatting of most country music videos. Another funny satire in the similar vein:

Thanks for the info! I’ll pass it on to the person who told me about the video; he wasn’t sure but felt rather certain it was satire.
