46 MPG on the TDI Wagon

So i’ve finished the first tank of diesel in our new (to us) Volkswagen Passat TDI Wagon. I probably could have made 900, but i decided to play it safe and fill up at about 850 miles. I quickly did some calculation, and figured out that we were getting 45.9 miles per gallon. That’s pretty good. I wanted to check the mileage as a baseline for trying experimentation with improving it, and also with trying bio-diesel. Apparently there is a 900 mile club of people who’ve made it 900 miles on a single tank of diesel. I probably could have made it, as i refilled before the fuel light even came on.

  1. The British TV car show, Top Gear, did an 800 mile round trip on public roads in an Audi A8 diesel. This car has a $L, V8 engine. Even Audi said it couldn’t be done.

They had to turn off cooling, heating, radio etc, and drive on the motorway at fairly low speeds to make it all the way, but they made it – just! I think they averged over 40MPG.

  2. Right on, Rabble! You should join the SF Biofuel Co-op – it’s where I fill up my TDI.

I’m only getting mid-30s mpg, probably because of my roof racks…
