I bought a boat!
For the last month or so i’ve become obsessed with the idea of sailing. Dunno exactly why, but it seems like an adventure, fun, and maybe if i learn how to sail better a way of seeing part of the world from a very different perspective.
At first i thought of buying the Sea Collective’s boat Derive, but that’s a crazy idea, i can’t sail a small boat, much less one with three masts.
Derive has been sold, but the idea of sailing stayed. Eventually i want to sail to Europe or Uruguay, but first i need to learn to sail. Then i can get a boat which will make the trip.
So, for now i’ve bought a 24 foot Islander Bahama in Stockton off of ebay for a $1000. I’ve never bought anything off of ebay, but it worked out pretty well. This morning i rented a car and talked Noah and Warren in to going to Stockton to pick up the boat.
I just paid for it, got a tour of the boat, signed over the paperwork. There was absolutely no wind, so we motored around for a while, got a feeling how it steered.
The plan is to take the train out and sail it back to the bay next weekend. Mostly i’ll be motoring, apparently it takes about 8 hours. I thought about keeping it in the bay at anchor, but i think that would make it harder to use, and learn how to sail. So i’m going to try and get a slip at the Berkeley Marina.
The Yacht, boat, i’m not so keen on the bougie ideas of having a yacht… doesn’t have a name. How odd a boat without a name. Any good suggestions of boat names?
Warren took photos of our trip and posted them on flickr.
