Motorola Doesn’t Get It

Motorola just released a phone / ipod combo with apple. It’s an interesting idea, but the thing only stores a max of 100 songs. Apparently it was a fight just to get Motorola to agree not to have a 25 song limit. You can’t get songs over the air either, you’ve got to hook it up to sync with your computer. Crazy if you ask me.

But it gets worse. Zander, the CEO of motorola recently said the following in an interview (via): “Screw the nano. What the hell does the nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs?”

Has he ever actually used a portable mp3 player? I mean personally i find 5,000 or 10,000 limits on the number of songs as too limited. It’s your music collection, not an album. Beyond that, a user should be able to get all the music they already own on their home computer, orb like, but with a good ipod style interface.

It would be really interesting if Apple started releasing it’s own phones based on a massively better user experience. If I can consider building my own phone, i’m sure apple’s considering it.

The only question i have, is would the carriers allow it? They killed the danger sidekick. Would apple be able to push it’s way in to the market. Apple could charge more and provide the phone separate from service where the users just get their gsm sim separately. Could the carriers refuse support for the phone? What would the FCC do, would it be a legal case which apple could use to break open the mobile industry?
